
LI Fenggong (李鳳公) (1884 – 1967), original name Fengting (鳳廷), was a native of Dong Guǎn, Guǎng dōng (廣東東莞). He learnt painting from his father in his early age, and at the same time he studied the techniques of Western painting. Li taught painting at Guangzhou Municipal Art School (廣州市立美術學校) and other institutions in Guangzhou (廣州). In 1925 he founded the Chinese Painting Research Society (國畫研究會) with Lǐ Yáopín (李瑤屏) and Zhào Hàogōng (趙浩公). Li migrated to Hong Kong and he continued teaching fine art. (Chiu Soong–ngar 趙崇雅 was one of his best students.) Li was the Chairman of the Executive Committee of Hong Kong Chung Kok Chinese Art Club (香港中國美術會) in 1960.
Li has a profound knowledge in the painting techniques of the old masters and excelled in painting flowers, birds, figures and landscapes. He also excelled in seal carving (篆刻) and authentication. His published works include A Discussion on Painting by Fenggong (鳳公畫語), Colouring Techniques (調色法) and History of Chinese Art (中國藝術史), etc.
