The following is a Ming dynasty ink-rubbing of the Lanting Xu by Zhi Yong (智永) from the Bao Ya Zhai (寶鴨齋) collection. It was cut into 8 pieces and mounted in an album, each piece measuring 23 cm in height and 9 cm in width. It was formerly owned by Rong Geng (容庚), a renowned scholar from Dongguan, Guangdong (廣東東莞). This masterpiece is currently kept in the Palace Museum (故宫博物院).
Zhi Yong (智永, c. 510–610 AD) was a prominent Chinese Buddhist monk and calligrapher during the Sui (隋) Dynasty. He is most famous for being the 7th-generation descendant of the ‘Sage of Calligraphy’, Wang Xizhi (王羲之). He adhered to the Wang family’s style and carried on its legacy, passing it down to Yu Shinan (虞世南) and others, thus ushering in a new era of regular script in the Tang Dynasty.
